Berkeley Men's Tennis Teams

Northern Jersey Tennis League: http://www.njtl.org/

BTC's 2019 Men's Tennis Teams Co-Captains: Bernie Jones and Mike Griot.

During the 2019 Season, the Berkeley Tennis Club (BTC) Men’s Teams will participate in the “all doubles” portion of the Northern Jersey Tennis League (NJTL) season beginning in July. We plan to run a season-long doubles ladder to form teams that will built up toward a July start-up. The NJTL encompasses clubs as far west as Morristown and as far north as Wayne. It includes cross-town rivals Maplewood Little and longtime foes Chatham Fish & Game. The men play a seven-club schedule with clubs whose courts are either Har-Tru (a synthetic clay-like surface) or less commonly, red clay, like Berkeley’s!

This year, we will be using BTC’s Monday night Heavy Hitters’ sessions to jump-start the season. Heavy Hitters will begin on May 6th at 6pm and run through the season. Al Crook, one of the pros from Bob Bynum’s Match Point Tennis (BBMPT), will be present to organize and oversee. Although not exclusive to the Men’s Tennis Team, these sessions are a great opportunity to improve our games, get a few pro tips and good workout - best of all - it is a membership-sponsored event. We’ll be playing the July-August Doubles League this year and use BTC's Monday evening sessions to pair players into doubles teams in preparation for the Berkeley Doubles Ladder - another effort to be competitive once the league season starts.

Our policy at Berkeley is to win as many of these matches as we can, while trying to get everyone who wants a chance to play—and to generally have a good time. The league’s real purpose is to organize match competition against clubs and players who wouldn’t normally play against each other. Competing for the team is very different than just playing at the club.
